Speaking about Transitive Frames in Propositional Languages

چکیده
This paper is a comparative study of the propositional intuitionistic (non-modal) and classical modal languages interpreted in the standard way on transitive frames. It shows that, when talking about these frames rather than conventional quasi-orders, the intuitionistic language displays some unusual features: its expressive power becomes weaker than that of the modal language, the induced consequence relation does not have a deduction theorem and is not protoalgebraic. Nevertheless, the paper develops a manageable model theory for this consequence and its extensions which also reveals some unexpected phenomena. The balance between the intuitionistic and modal languages is restored by adding to the former one more implication. 1 Both modal and intuitionistic propositional languages may be regarded as talking about quasi-orders F = hW;Ri, R a re exive and transitive binary relation on a set W . The modal languageML with the primitive connectives, say, ^, _, !, ? and 2 is interpreted in F by means of valuations V of propositional variables in the power-set 2 of W and the truth-relation j= in the following way: x j= p i x 2 V(p); p a variable; (1) x 6j= ?; (2) x j= ' ^ i x j= ' and x j= ; (3) x j= ' _ i x j= ' or x j= ; (4) x j= '! i x j= ' implies x j= ; (5) x j= 2' i 8y 2 W (xRy ) y j= '): (6) School of Information Science, JAIST, Tatsunokuchi, Ishikawa 923{12, Japan; e-mail: [email protected]. Verbs and syntactic frames in children's elicited actions: a comparison of Tamil- and English-speaking children.
We directly compare children learning argument expressing and argument dropping languages on the use of verb meaning and syntactic cues, by examining enactments of transitive and intransitive verbs given in transitive and intransitive syntactic frames. Our results show similarities in the children's knowledge: (1) Children were somewhat less likely to perform an action when the core meaning of ...
متن کاملObject and Action Naming: A Study on Persian-Speaking Children
Objectives: Nouns and verbs are the central conceptual linguistic units of language acquisition in all human languages. While the noun-bias hypothesis claims that nouns have a privilege in children’s lexical development across languages, studies on Mandarin and Korean and other languages have challenged this view. More recent cross-linguistic naming studies on children in German, Turkish,...
متن کاملThe Computational Complexity of Hybrid Temporal Logics
In their simplest form, hybrid languages are propositional modal languages which can refer to states. They were introduced by Arthur Prior, the inventor of tense logic, and played an important role in his work: because they make reference to specific times possible, they remove the most serious obstacle to developing modal approaches to temporal representation and reasoning. However very little...
متن کاملRudimentary Kripke Models for the Intuitionistic Propositional Calculus
DoSen, K., Rudimentary Kripe models for the intuitionistic propositional calculus, Annals of Pure and Applied Logic 62 (1993) 21-49. It is shown that the intuitionistic propositional calculus is sound and complete with respect to Kripke-style models that are not quasi-ordered. These models, called rudimentary Kripke models, differ from the ordinary intuitionistic Kripke models by making fewer a...
متن کاملReflections on Manner/Result Complementarity
Nonstative verbs from various lexical fields are often classified as either manner or result verbs—a distinction implicated in language acquisition (Behrend 1990, Gentner 1978, Gropen et al. 1991), as well as in argument realization. Intuitively speaking, manner verbs specify as part of their meaning a manner of carrying out an action, while result verbs specify the coming about of a result sta...
